Here at Adcure, every breast reduction procedure starts with a thorough conversation and consultations with one of our surgeons who specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery. At this stage, the surgeon discloses relevant information about the entire surgical procedure to the patient, explaining the risks involved, the course of operation, aftercare, and recovery.
If handled properly, reduction mammoplasty should not have any undesired consequences, although the patients considering it should be aware of these risks:
- temporary bruising
- loss or reduction of sensations of the nipple and the surrounding area
- difficulties with breastfeeding, or complete inability
- asymmetry of breasts
Prior to surgery, patients are advised to make preparations for home aftercare. Preparing lots of ice, clean gauzes, wash clothes and towels, comfortable t-shirts and clothes is recommended.
The procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia and lasts from 2 to 4 hours.
The surgeon will make a circular incision around the nipple and downward on the breast in the form of a keyhole. Assisting team will then remove excess fat, skin, and tissue from your breast, and reposition the patient’s nipple and areola.
The nipple and areola usually stay attached to the breast during the operation, but sometimes they need to be removed and repositioned higher, due to skin graft on the breast being very large. The breast is stitched and wrapped in a special gauze dressing and or bandages.
Recovery and Post – Op Care
Immediately after the breast reduction surgery, a tube might be placed under the patients each armpit to drain any excess blood or fluid. The patient is prescribed with pain-relief medication and antibiotics to decrease the risk of an infection.
In the first couple of days after the procedure, the breasts feel tender and sensitive. The breasts might be swollen and bruised in the next 3 to 4 weeks following the surgery, or longer.
Patients are advised to restrain from physical activities for at least 2 to 4 weeks, and avoiding underwire bras in that period as well.
Successful reduction mammoplasty results in an instant neck, shoulders, and back pain relief. After the operation the patients increase their ability to participate in physical activities, they feel more confident, and their body image is improved.
The results are generally permanent, although breasts shape and size may change due to different factors, such as aging and weight gain or loss.
