What does it involve?
A facelift may be done under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the amount of work to be done, and usually requires an overnight stay in hospital.
The procedure takes between two and five hours to perform. The surgeon will make an incision in front of the ear that will extend into the hairline, or into the hair itself, and also behind the ear into the scalp.
The surgeon will then separate the skin from the underlying fat and tissue and pull it up gently to an appropriate tightness. The excess skin is then removed.
If the procedure is combined with a neck lift, a small incision will be made under the chin in order to tighten the skin and tissue of the neck.
Once the procedure is complete, the incisions will be closed by stitches or staples.
Post – Op Care
Directly after surgery, your face will be bandaged and you will remain in hospital overnight for observation and will be discharged the next day.
Medication will be prescribed to relieve the pain and tenderness that are a result of the operation. There will be some bruising and swelling. This is usually at its worst two days after the operation and will fade in five to seven days.
The stitches or staples will come out five to ten days after surgery. During this time, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding bathing and washing, as the bandages must be kept dry.
The effects will be visible once the swelling has abated, although numbness and scarring can take up to a year to fade.
