One of the earliest signs of ageing is the Gill, or submental fullness under the chin. Also known as a double chin, this condition affects both men and women. A double chin is aesthetically displeasing as it has a negative impact on the symmetry of the face and makes the sufferer look older and heavier than they actually are.

The Gill is not just a result of ageing and can also be caused by weight gain or genetics and is, unfortunately, extremely difficult to remedy with diet and exercise.

What is Gill Liposuction?

The Gill is caused by a build-up of fat under the chin. Liposuction is a tried and proven method of effectively removing unwanted fat from various areas of the body, in this case the chin. Liposuction of a double chin is the easiest method of addressing double chin issues. It can also be combined with jowl liposuction if necessary.

What does it involve?

Operation of the Gill is one of the simplest chin surgeries to perform. It is conducted as an outpatient procedure. A local anaesthetic combined with a sedative is administered before the surgery. A small hole is made underneath each earlobe and a furrow under the chin. These allow the surgeon to perform liposuction on the entire region. If there is a great deal of excess fat in the region, this may result in sagging skin after the procedure, which will have to be surgically removed. Usually, however, the skin will contract and reattach to the tissue of the chin by itself.

Who is the ideal candidate for Gill Liposuction?

If you suffer from excess of fat around the chin and jowls, you will benefit from this procedure. It is important to consult with your surgeon beforehand to determine will simple liposuction be sufficient or will you need to combine it with a face-lift to remove excess skin and smooth the contours of your face for a more youthful and appealing look.

Post – Op Care

Gill liposuction is an outpatient procedure which lasts around one to two hours, and the patient will go home on the same day as the procedure is performed. After the operation, a band will be fitted from the chin to the head, and this must be worn for at least 48 hours.

Strenuous exercise and activity should be avoided for at least four to five days after the surgery has been performed. The results will begin to be visible approximately one week after the procedure, when the swelling and bruising subside.
