Gynecomastia is an endocrine system disorder which results in the increase of male breast tissue. This condition is usually caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia surgery is the most effective treatment for enlarged male breasts. This cosmetic procedure removes excess glandular tissue and fat and restores flatter and more masculine shape of the chest.
Male gynecomastia is associated with many risk factors such as the use of illegal drugs and alcohol. Also, there are health conditions like hypogonadism, tumors, and hyperthyroidism that cause hormone imbalance and can cause enlargement of male breasts.
Gynecomastia operation can be performed through one of two methods: liposuction and tissue excision.
Risks involved with gynecomastia include, but are not limited to:
- anesthesia risks
Experienced surgeons from Adcure make these risks minimal and procedures straightforward, easy and painless.
Treating gynecomastia with liposuction
This is the simpler of two methods of performing male breast surgery. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. It involves a small incision on both sides of the chest, through which a thin metal cannula is inserted, attached to the suction device, and used to remove excess fat.
At the completion of the procedure, the surgeon closes the incisions carefully, which are virtually invisible after healing. Liposuction is recommended for younger patients with good skin elasticity.
Following the liposuction gynecomastia surgery, the recovery process is fairly tolerable. Patients receive a compression garment to wear for 2 to 3 weeks, and physical exercise is not advised in the same period of time. Patients can return to work or school several days after the procedure.
Treating gynecomastia with tissue excision
This treatment is effective with more severe cases of male gynecomastia. It involves surgical tissue excision and allows the surgeon to remove a larger amount of glandular tissue and skin that cannot be removed with liposuction only.
Gynecomastia operation with tissue excision is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with sedation. A small, circular incision is made around the areola so that the breast tissue can be removed with the smallest scar possible. In need of removing and tightening excess skin, additional incisions are made.
The recovery process is similar to recovery after liposuction. It usually takes 1- 2 weeks on average, and during this time, patients should avoid strenuous activity and exercise. A compression vest is recommended to help the skin retract and prevent fluid accumulation. Bruising and swelling is normal, and it gradually resolves before final results are visible.
The patient is fully recovered and the results are optimal (and final) 6 months post operation.
Gynecomastia surgery results are visible immediately, although it takes 3 to 6 months to achieve final results. Patients notice improved shape and appearance of their chest. Improved body image results in the enhanced self-image and confidence boost.
