LIFTING FACE / NECK
As we get older, our skin starts to betray the effects of passing time. This is particularly true of the face, which, along with the ravages of time in the form of sagging skin, wrinkles and deep expression lines, is also exposed to sun damage, which accentuates the aforementioned deformities. Face lifting, formally known as a Rhytidectomy, can help reverse the ill-effects of the passing years and allow you to look and feel young again.
What is a Face Lift?
A face lift is face surgery that treats the lower sections of the face, tightening loose skin to bring definition back to the contours of your jaws and smooth out wrinkles and deep lines around the mouth. Combined with a neck lift, it can restore definition, harmony and symmetry to your features, giving you a rejuvenated appearance by:
- Tightening sagging skin and removing the excess,
- Reducing drooping cheeks around the jawline (jowls),
- Lifting the corners of the mouth and smoothing out the creases around it.
Who is a candidate for a face lift?
Anybody who would like to turn back the clock and look younger again should consider a face lift. However, there are some things to keep in mind before opting for the surgery:
- A face lift will not turn you into somebody else, it’s important to have reasonable expectations of what can be achieved by the procedure.
- A face lift will make you look younger, but It will not stop the overall aging process.
- The results are not permanent as your body will continue to age after the procedure.
What does it involve?
A facelift may be done under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the amount of work to be done, and usually requires an overnight stay in hospital.
The procedure takes between two and five hours to perform. The surgeon will make an incision in front of the ear that will extend into the hairline, or into the hair itself, and also behind the ear into the scalp.
The surgeon will then separate the skin from the underlying fat and tissue and pull it up gently to an appropriate tightness. The excess skin is then removed.
If the procedure is combined with a neck lift, a small incision will be made under the chin in order to tighten the skin and tissue of the neck.
Once the procedure is complete, the incisions will be closed by stitches or staples.
Post – Op Care
Directly after surgery, your face will be bandaged and you will remain in hospital overnight for observation and will be discharged the next day.
Medication will be prescribed to relieve the pain and tenderness that are a result of the operation. There will be some bruising and swelling. This is usually at its worst two days after the operation and will fade in five to seven days.
The stitches or staples will come out five to ten days after surgery. During this time, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding bathing and washing, as the bandages must be kept dry.
The effects will be visible once the swelling has abated, although numbness and scarring can take up to a year to fade.
